MERAPI CONSERVATION: 4 Villages at the summit of Mount Merapi Pledge the Declaration for Merapi Conservation

Four villages in the closest proximity to the peak of Mount Merapi have declared their commitment to prevention of forest degradation and rehabilitation of the forests in Mount Merapi areas in Stabelan Sub-Village of Tlogolele Village of Selo sub-district, Boyolali on Monday (5/6). The four villages are Tlogolele Village and Suroteleng Village (Selo Sub-District), Wonodoyo (Cepogo Sub-District), and Ngargomulyo Village (Dukun Sub-District of Magelang District). The villages have pledged their commitment among others to wholeheartedly contribute to realising sustainable Merapi areas and to coordinate in preventing damage to Merapi areas.

 

The declaration was announced by each of the respective head of village in the presence of Solidaridad, an international NGO, Business Watch Indonesia (BWI) leadership, Bambang Jiyanto the Head of the Boyolali District Office of Agriculture, Selo Sub-District high officials and other stakeholders.

 

The Declaration was part of the observation of the World’s Environment Day. The observation was also marked by the handover of 1,000 of Arabica coffee seedlings to the local community, to be planted in the slopes of Merapi. The coffee seedlings would be planted using agroforestry system, which constitutes the participation of the local community in Merapi conservation.

 

BWI leadership, Aris Buntara, indicated that the first planting would be conducted in Stabelan sub-village, the highest altitude sub-village that is only 3.5 km away from the summit of Mount Merapi. “Tlogolele is one of the 10 villages involved in Sustainable Merapi Landscape Management facilitated by BWI and Solidaridad,” he said to the journalists during the event.
