Semarang –The welfare of the farmers and the preservation of the environment in Central Java province will continuously be ensured to improve, including by the recent establishment of the Secretariat for Sustainable Food Landscape that is supported by a number of member states of Solidaridad Asia South and Southeast Asia.

The inauguration of the secretariat was held at the Gradhika Bakti PrajaBuilding in the Central Java Provincial Office compound on Jalan Pahlawan, Semarang, on Wednesday (7/6/2017) night. The platform is part of the program on sustainable landscape management in Central Java that is facilitated by Business Watch Indonesia (BWI).

The inauguration of the secretariat was held during the panel discussion on “Sustainable Landscape Management in Central Java Province” that was attended by relevant institutions, academicians, and delegation of representatives of a number of Solidaridad member states.

"This is a historical program as it deals with not only one commodity but other commodities as well like tea, cacao, coconut, and coffee. Coffee planting has also started on the slopes of Mount Merapi on the 5th of June 2017,” said Shatadru Chattopadhayay Managing Director of Solidaridad South Asia and Southeast Asia to detikcom.

Solidaridad South Asia and Southeast Asia is a non-profit organisation based in India with 50 member states, including Indonesia. Support has been provided by Solidaridad for the improvement of the quality of agricultural products without compromising the environment.

"So, we are trying to improve the economy of the farmers in Central Java without contributing to environmental damage,” Shatardu confirmed.

As a facilitator and with the support of government institutions, BWI has selected 6 pilot areas for sustainable landscape in Central Java, that is Sukoharjo, Klaten, Purworejo, Sragen, Wonogiri, and Boyolali.

"We are concerned with improving not only the productivity but also the quality of the Indonesian products in the market,” confirmed Shatadru further.

Program activities have inluded introduction on climate responsive agricultural practices to soybean farmers, coffee agroforestry, and conservation of forest areas around Merapi, as well as strengthening of women farmers’ capacity and village facilitators in 5 districts in Serayu river basin.

"Improved income will improve purchasing power, which in turn can increase the ability to purchase agricultural products at better prices and accordingly boost farmers’ spirit,” said the ViceGovernor of Central Java Province, Heru Sudjatmoko, after the inauguration of the Secretariat for Sustainable Food Landscape.
